One of the most desired things in a garden is to have a magnificent lawn

The good season has begun and the time has come to enjoy your magnificent lawn. A lawn that will be the pride and joy of the neighborhood and, if properly cared for, will be lush and green. To assist you in this task, we have drawn up a list of important things to remember:

A regular cut is important, as it thickens the lawn. As for the cutting technique, it is advisable to cut the grass little and often rather than all at once. With each cut, change the pattern and direction of cut, otherwise, the stem will always be pushed in the same direction. For each cut, it is a good idea to shorten the stem by half or two thirds to about 5 centimeters. In mid-summer, it is possible to leave the grass a little higher, as it is more resistant to periods of drought.

Cutting the grass removes nutrients from the lawn: to achieve maximum growth, this nutrient must be returned. Therefore, from the beginning of spring, it is necessary to fertilize the lawn every four to five weeks. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are the substances required, which is why mixtures of lawn-specific fertilizers are commercially available. The quantities of fertilizer to be used are indicated in detail on the packaging.

If you want a lush, green lawn throughout the summer, irrigation is essential and the frequency of irrigation varies according to temperature and humidity. The lawn needs to be irrigated when it takes on a blue-grey color and the older leaf blades of the plant begin to curl or wilt. If you have sown a new lawn, you will need to water it once a day so that the seeds can sprout and form a good root system.

Nowadays, you can irrigate your lawn with minimal effort. In fact, it is possible to water the garden by hand or automatically (partially or totally). The GARDENA product range includes mobile or fixed irrigation solutions as well as pumps and control units. If desired, intelligent, computer-controlled sprinklers and automatic systems can take care of everything – all you have to do is the program and position them.

  1. Weeds under control
Thanks to the tenacity and the use of the appropriate technique, it will be possible to defeat the weeds of the lawn. Many weeds can be removed using mechanical tools. Smaller weeds, such as veronicas or white clover, can be removed with a manual scarifier, and you often use this tool to hinder and prevent the growth of these plants. Daisies and dandelions can be removed with a root weeder: it is important to eradicate as much of the root as possible to prevent the plant from growing again. If in spite of everything, weeds have still invaded the lawn, the use of herbicides should be considered. If the situation has not yet been resolved, the best solution is to restructure the entire soil and cover it with rolled lawns.
  2. Scarification and aeration
To grow and breathe, the grassroots need air. Often, the lawn soil is not sandy enough for the roots to have the necessary air, which makes growth difficult. Using a simple pitchfork you can drill holes in the lawn and fill them with raw sand. This allows water from the surface to flow deep into the ground and also provides oxygen for the roots. It is possible to scarify the lawn to remove dead roots and other debris, as peat removal helps to give breath to the lower parts of the grass, helping the stems to grow better.
